Tap Hidden Savings by Right-Sizing Your Communications Services

The economy is down, but, as highlighted in this issue, there is an upside if you buy telecom and wireless services. Service providers are feeling the pressure as well and doing everything they can to hang onto existing customers. That means there are some great opportunities for reducing costs, consolidating services, and adjusting terms.

Take one of our healthcare clients, for example. After running traffic studies on their voice and data services, and understanding current utilization, it was clear there was lots of room to do things like eliminate circuits and reduce activations-all without affecting operational performance and efficiency.

But the best news for the client was that these changes would reduce their cash outflow by more than $300,000 a year. Not bad. Another client asked us to take a look at their wireless bills and usage on phones and aircards. Again, we saw ways to optimize service without inconveniencing users. In this case, that translated to more than $180,000 of yearly savings for the client with a project fee less than 10% of the first year savings.

So what's my quick takeaway from both engagements? In a nutshell, it's that most companies with significant telecom and wireless costs are probably overpaying or underutilizing services, and that is an opportunity that all organizations should be focused on in this environment.

By Scott Fogle, Co-President and Co-Founder, Advocate Networks, LLC

Enterprises will continue to capitalize on the mobility benefits brought by broadband wireless networks, ever-increasing numbers of remote workers and skyrocketing demand for services – from any location.

The challenge of protecting this growing number of mobile laptops in the face of new threats is mounting. IT must ensure that these devices don't bring dangerous viruses or worms back into the enterprise and that their sensitive data is not exposed to compromise.
