Out Front With Advocate Networks

By Scott Fogle,
Co-President and Co-Founder,
Advocate Networks, LLC

Does your company utilize a third-party data center to house important computer systems, network equipment and data?

•  Likely, the answer is “YES,” as private data centers are expensive to build and maintain, and the importance of computer application, data availability and security continues to increase

Have you compared your data center-services costs and performance to best-in-class rates, terms and conditions?

•  If you answered “NO,” we can help!

Over the past five years, Advocate Networks' consultants have benchmarked and procured data center, hosting and collocation services for a wide range of clients in financial services, healthcare, technology, retail, business services, communications, media and energy industries.

Most recently, Advocate Networks completed a data center collocation services competitive-negotiations project for Univision, the largest television programmer and broadcaster to the Latin American market in the United States.  The results of the project improved costs and service-level agreements, and uncovered new configuration options for storage area network and remote-hands services.

“The Advocate Networks team brought benchmark data, data-center expertise and confident guidance in the process to significantly improve our negotiations for new collocation services,” said Lindsey Johnson, Director of Technology Sourcing with Univision in Miami, Fla.  The project was completed in 45 days, generated a less than three-month return on the investment in Advocate Networks fees, and an $180,000-plus costs savings over three years.

What our customers are saying...
Spotlight on Cypress Communications

“I wanted to thank you and the Advocate Team for your help and participation in our recent strategic sourcing project, which yielded outstanding results.  Through an effective partnership with Advocate Networks, we were able to achieve an appreciable reduction in network costs.  Advocate applied a process of assessing our spend, benchmarking against best-in-class pricing and facilitating the management of an RFP process including six vendors.  As a result of our engagement with Advocate, a new three-year contract with our leading vendor will greatly reduce our costs over the term of the agreement.  It was instrumental to have the Advocate Networks team available to assist when needed, and we will not hesitate to recommend you highly to other telecommunications service providers.”

Vice President – Network Planning,
Cypress Communications

The Benefits of Regular Wireless Optimization

By Rob Stewart, Managing Consultant,
Enterprise Consulting, Advocate Networks, LLC

Advocate Networks routinely provides enterprise clients with assessments of their wireless voice and data spend. Just as routinely, we find that without effective, ongoing management of wireless devices, wireless spend creeps rapidly out of control. In many cases, wireless expenses rival those of Wide Area Network costs, which means that clients are effectively providing an expensive “overlay” network to their carefully designed WAN!

We recently identified savings of 52 percent of a client's $1.3-million wireless spend, just in optimization opportunities.

Assessing the Performance and Security
of your Wi-Fi Network

By Walter Jeske, Senior Consultant,
Advocate Networks, LLC

Wireless LAN (WLAN) site surveys are traditionally used during the pre-deployment phase of a WLAN implementation, but these assessments are an important part of your routine IT operations. WLAN site surveys supply information to accurately locate, install and configure the radio frequency (RF) parameters of access points (APs) and antennas.  This helps to ensure the required coverage and performance defined during the WLAN requirements-and-design phase are met.  Site surveys, at a minimum, provide coverage and performance maps along with some minimum throughput value in all defined-user locations.  As a secondary task, a site survey could include a report detailing other RF signals, including other WLANs, as well as any competing RF signals and interference.

Ongoing community service...
Spotlight on Mountain Top Boys’ Home

Advocate Networks was recently featured in the Mountain Top Boys’ Home monthly newsletter regarding its continued community service with the organization. The article, “The Heart of a Company Beats on the Mountain,” discusses the woodshop repair, landscaping and painting Advocate completed at the boys’ home in 2008.

Mountain Top Boys’ Home is a foster home for young men aged 11 to 17. Its goal is to provide discipline, support and education to help these boys become productive members of society. Advocate Networks is excited to continue its service to Mountain Top in 2009!

Special thanks to Michael Padgett, electrician; John Norris, President of American Roofing Systems; and Barbara and Jerry Fogle, project managers.
