"Go Green - as in Saving Money"

I recently attended Data Center World in Orlando. One of the major themes for the gathering of data center managers and technology providers was "Go Green."? As you have probably experienced with the recent spike in gas prices, data center managers are also experiencing increased costs for the precious lifeblood of any data center - electricity.? In some cases, data center managers are seeing 30% increases in the kilowatt per hour rate for electricity, and electricity can be 25% or more of the on-going costs of data center operations.

What is a data center manager to do?

Start asking questions about data center power efficiency, airflow, cooling system efficiency and idle equipment power usage.? Consider bringing in an expert with an infrared camera to identify hot-spots at each power distribution panel, and creating an airflow model to ensure you are getting the maximum return from your cooling dollars.? If your IT systems are operating in a third-party data center, you can ask the same questions of your vendor.? If you are buying power circuits for your cabinets and peripherals, talk to your vendor about switching to metered power and compare costs on a per-circuit basis with metered power.? You may also be able to reduce power costs by scheduling the availability of key power-hungry peripherals.

Data center managers should also increase awareness of "green" ratings and power usage levels of key IT systems with the engineering teams that specify equipment for the data center floor.? All major IT systems vendors are focusing on increasing power efficiency and you should include these specifications in your next RFP requirements.? You can also check out information available at www.thegreengrid.org.? The Green Grid is a global consortium dedicated to advancing energy efficiency in data centers and business computing ecosystems.

Will the Economic Crisis Trickle Down to Telecom?
Telecom Pros Contemplate Cost-Cutting Maneuvers

Colleen Stewart
Oct. 23, 2008 (Vol. 29, No. 21)

Capital expenditures are on indefinite hold at Benjamin Moore & Co., reports Rody Kemple, voice telecom manager at the Montvale, N.J.-based paint manufacturer.

It's just one way companies are coping with the economic crisis, which has sparked fears of layoffs and bankruptcies across nearly every industry in the U.S. The Dow dropped a record-breaking 733 points last Wednesday, topped only by the staggering 778 point decline of Sept. 29, and bailout plans haven't been able to solidly boost the economy yet.

A few telecom pros interviewed by Voice Report already have seen drastic alterations as a result, but most have not yet felt the effects of the still very recent stock market dive.

Read on for Voice Report's look into how telecom managers are responding to the crisis, and what they are planning for a possibly bleak financial future. Are you on track?

Strengthening Your Position in a Tough Market

Ever heard someone say, "Let's separate the wheat from the chaff." It's an old-timey expression that means keeping what has value (the wheat) and trashing what has no value (the hard, outer chaff).

Tough markets have a way of literally turning companies into wheat and chaff. It's already starting to happen. So, not surprisingly, many service providers are beginning to ask two important questions: How do we maintain our value? And how do we avoid getting trashed by the slowdown?

New Data Center Cost Estimates from the Uptime Institute

You may be familiar with the "Dollars per KW plus Dollars per Square Foot of Computer Floor" white paper from the Uptime Institute for data center construction cost estimation. Following the update to their widely referenced Tier classifications paper, this benchmark for thumbnail cost estimation has been updated as well. If you'd like to look at it directly, it can be found here.

Beginning several years ago, the Institute put together some very good work to give us guidance on the cost of data centers according to Tier classification. The cost model is based upon the premise (quite accurately so) that the cost of the MEP infrastructure is far and away the dominant driver in the cost of erecting an IT facility. The model simply separates the cost of the building and support space from the cost of the MEP infrastructure.

Simmons Bedding Co. Says Job Well Done!

Simmons Bedding Company recently singled out Advocate Networks for a bit of praise and appreciation. With the company's wireless and wireline agreements about to expire, Simmons Technical Services Director Brenda Standridge asked her trusted advisors to once again lend a hand.

Enterprise Consulting Practice Managing Consultant Rob Stewart and his team used their market knowledge, carrier relationships, and negotiation expertise to quickly deliver more flexible, cost-effective agreements for both service categories.

"We know who to ask, what to ask for, and how to ask for it," Stewart says. "Those are leverage multipliers that enable us to get the job done faster and more effectively for our clients, while ensuring that the client/carrier relationship is strengthened as a result."
